On September 9, 1972, Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium was officially opened.  In 2005, the stadium was renovated and enhanced with the addition of a ProGrass surface.  This renovation further ensured that 10,000-seat facility would remain one of the finest facilities in the country.  During the renovation of 2005 the field itself was enhanced.  The existing buildings were not.  The existing support buildings are not large enough to provide the space needed for out 100-man football team and its growing coach staff or the men's and women's soccer teams that now call Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium home.  The athletic department, with support for the administration has a plan to add new facilities that support the stadium that is already home to hundreds of Pioneer athletes and students.   The building will be located southwest of the field, that will provide space not only for the football team but also soccer teams, coaching staffs, and the officials, that work home events.   The new building will have a multi-purpose space for team meetings, film review, game preparation, and special events.

In conjunction with this building plan the university will be honoring a long-time football coach with the naming of the field as "Butch Leitl Field."  Coach Leitl coached football from 1927 through 1963 and won 7 conference championships.  The final name for the field and stadium will be "Butch Leitl Field at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium."
